The UK Woodland Assurance Standard is an independent certification standard for verifying sustainable woodland management in the United Kingdom. The UKWAS guidelines cover all aspects of forest management from initial planning to final harvesting. Miller Land Management can provide professional advice on the process of UKWAS certification for your woodland and assist with all the necessary documentation.
We can develop the required management plan and ensure that the day to day management of the woodland complies with all the requirements of UKWAS. Once the requirements of the standard have been met, the woodland owner or manager can apply to be assessed by one of several independent certification bodies. We can also arrange auditing and certification through a suitable group certification scheme. This involves an initial detailed audit followed by annual audits thereafter to ensure compliance with UKWAS is maintained.
What are the benefits?
Certification provides credible and independently verified evidence that the woodland is being appropriately managed to an internationally recognised standard. Certification can help forest managers demonstrate to owners, investors, the general public (and themselves!) that they are meeting their objectives of responsible long-term management. It can also provide a competitive edge as buyers increasingly insist on evidence that products are derived from sustainably managed woodland and are prepared to pay a premium for this.
